Course Overview

Are you passionate about the care of animals and looking to gain some fundamental knowledge before embarking on a higher qualification? If so, ACM10117 Certificate I in Animal Studies is an ideal introduction to this industry. This course is a prevocational, nationally recognised qualification, allowing flexibility in learning and assessment. A number of the units within this qualification can be used towards higher level qualifications in the Animal Care and Management Training Package (ACM).

Course Delivery Information

ACM10117 Certificate I in Animal Studies is conducted as a self-paced online course. You will have access to the course for a period of six (6) months. You are required to complete activities and assessments online (including multiple choice questions and online scenarios). While practical placement isn't compulsory for this course, you may find it beneficial.

A number of the units within this qualification can be used towards higher level qualifications in the Animal Care and Management Training Package (ACM).

Who is this suitable for?

Anyone interested in gaining a nationally recognised qualification as a stepping stone to finding a career in the Animal Care industry (e.g. veterinary nurse or an animal attendant at a pet shop, welfare establishment, grooming parlour, kennel or cattery).

Entry Requirements

There is no specific pre-requisite knowledge required for entry, however it is recommended that you:

  • Have completed Year 10 or be a mature aged student
  • Practical placement at an animal care workplace is not compulsory, however you will find it beneficial
  • Access to handling and feeding a range of animals
  • Reliable internet access, ability to film yourself for assessments and an email address.This course is purely online

Group 1: Core Units

(All 5 units must be completed)

ACMGAS101 Investigate job opportunities in animal care and related industries

  • This unit of competency covers the introductory process of investigating work activities undertaken by a cross section of animal care and management businesses and evaluating employment opportunities.

ACMGAS102 Catch and handle a range of quiet animals

  • This unit of competency covers the techniques required to approach, catch and handle a range of quiet, well-handled domestic animals under supervision.

ACMGAS103 Assist in the care of animals

  • This unit of competency covers introductory level skills in the basic care of quiet, well-handled animals under supervision.

ACMWHS201 Participate in workplace health and safety processes

  • This unit of competency covers the process required for an entry level employee to participate in workplace health and safety (WHS) processes in the workplace, in order to ensure their own health and safety at work, as well as that of others in the workplace who may be affected by their actions.

ACMGAS202 Participate in workplace communications

  • This unit of competency covers the process of effectively participating in workplace communications in an animal care and management environment.

Group 2: Elective Units

(Complete these two electives)

ACMGAS204 Feed and water animals

  • This unit of competency covers the process of preparing, presenting and distributing food and water for animals under supervision and according to workplace diet requirements.

ACMGAS208 Source information for animal care needs

  • This unit of competency covers the processes required to gather information on medications and services for animals and relate these to individual animal requirements and audience needs.

Fees

  • $990 AUD

Fees are payable by credit card, bank transfer, money order, bank cheque or personal cheque.

This course is not eligible for Australian Government Traineeships or Incentives.
